Local Ikebana artist Shoso Shimbo has just created a work using materials from our craft shop that has been accepted to be included in an up and coming art exhibition – and we’re mighty chuffed to say that he created this work using OUR materials!

Oh, and we REALLY hate to namedrop….but Shoso is actually Peter and Sonia’s brother in law – so we’re triply proud of him!!

Emerging Artists and Sculptors are invited to submit work that best depicts an aspect of Rural Life and the environment in a new initiative Rural Art Competition that will feature as part of the 20th Anniversary Celebrations of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, to be held on 18th–20th February, 2011.

This Competition will appeal to artists who enjoy producing works themed on rural life and the environment.

This work is called ‘Fire and Flood’.

According to Shoso, it examines the complex nature of our relationship with the environment. Fire and Flood, two extremes of the Australian environment. The burnt wood is a reminder of the Black Saturday fires and the devastation they caused, and the tubing represents the wild and unpredictable nature of the recent flooding which has affected many parts of the globe.

The two elements come together in this work in balance and harmony, in the hope that one day we will be able to manage natural disasters like these and find a balance between the earth and the demands of human societies.
